It happens everywhere, not just Mexico City. Some call it gentrification, others call it “progress.” The locals are upset when expats (and wealthy nationals) move into renovated areas but it would appear that the base for this transformation stems from the developers desire to make profits. Once they create the new area, of course those who can afford it want to be there. But they’re not the ones starting it, only becoming the new wave to take advantage of it. If the city doesn’t want the change, they shouldn’t approve the permits for developers. Let’s not forget decreased crime and influx of money that reaches many is a benefit. Perhaps more effort to assist those displaced is emphasized. Some would ask, “Is progress really progress?”

It’s hard to say. Unless you have a lawyer and a good case you’re unlikely to be compensated unfortunately. Many people are simple pushed further out geographically to more affordable areas, potentially over and over again as the gentrification bubble expands.

Are they compensated in any way?? Or are they just tossed aside??

From my studies, there’s good gentrification and then there’s bad gentrification. Mexico’s leadership acknowledges, and supports, the iron law of the marketplace, which unfortunately hurts many people.
