I lead 5 day tours of Mexico City Art museums and I put the Casa Azul and the Diego/Frida house on the last day because that’s what my guests are most interested in seeing. I’m always interested in their reactions – it’s almost as though we’re entering a religious shrine when we’re in Casa Azul.

There is another “Red House”, but it is called Casa Colorada. It is located a short walking distance from Museo de Kahlo, at the corner of Higuera and Vallarta, right across the street from Plaza de la Conchita very near Parque Frida Kahlo with a statue of her. “This name is given to a beautiful colonial-era building. It is located at the site that historians identify as the first Spanish settlement in the Valley of Mexico, namely, Hernán Cortés’ military camp during the conquest’s final stages. It is also known as the House of Malinche, but it is known that it couldn’t have belonged to this historical figure as the structure dates back to the 18th century. It is one of the typical houses in Coyoacán and one of the oldest buildings in the area. It has a façade made of tezontle and mortar and is painted red.”

Decades the question could be posed: who is better Rivera or Kahlo? Part of her being picked up into feminist discourse. Then lots of attention to their marriage. Then Frida alone and then the phenomenon.
