I first encountered them on a 6 month trip starting in Costa Rica moving north after I retired in 2009. At first I couldn’t figure out the what was going on with the pricing schedule listed on an hourly basis outside the office on a big board. Usually on the outskirts of the cities and usually bright orange. Every one I have stayed in have been very reasonable and nice rooms. The only thing I didn’t like was the taxi’s pulling in and out all night (used to be the VW bugs which are noisy) and the people only staying a few hours and the maids constantly having to change the linens after they leave. Plus the squeaking beds and moaning in the rooms adjacent all night. I only stay in hotels now adays. It definitely is uniquely Mexican.

We stay in these on our drive from Mexico to the border. Always very clean and comfortable. They have always accepted our 3 dogs with no extra charge and the secure parking is a plus. Your article doesn’t mention the “sex chairs” that have been in every one or additionally some extra special “swings”( with instructions !) in some of the “better” 🤣 ones! It’s always interesting to see what we encounter. Menus on the wall with everything from chips and sodas to lubes, condoms and Viagra !

Learned about this years ago when we “had” to find a place for the night and found ourselves in Culiacan, Sinaloa after dark. Family of four in a room with buttons on the side of the bed and mirrors everywhere! Nothing but porn on the TV. They looked at us kinda funny when we wandered into what looked like a restaurant the next morning trying to get some breakfast….

When I was dating my first husband, we would tell my mom we were going to the “movies” the code word for us for “M for motel”. If we really went to the movies/theatre he and I would say theatre. She never questioned us what the movie was about. My parents loved him. We got away with so much. Clever right? Well as teenagers we thought so. I was 17 when we got married, they signed the under age document right away. We’re still friends after all these years. This year in June I told him “happy 50th anniversary”, we both laughed. I liked this article. I have stayed in both motels and hotels here in Mexico.
