I worked for Mexicana de Aviacion and then Aerocalifornia from 1979-90. Mexico’s two peninsulas (Baja and Yucatan) were unknown frontiers really until the late 1980s. It was the Mexican Riviera (Mazatlan to Acapulco) that ruled air lift and popularity. Cabo’s emergence is tied to the decline of nearly every Pacific resort (PV being the exception), and American travelers wanting new resorts and more modern amenities. Enter foreign investment (led by the Spaniards gobbling up Mexican banks in the 1980’s financial collapse), and the parade left Pacific Mexico with few flights and an inevitable pivot to domestic Mexican vacationers. Cabo and Cancun were shiney, new and all that blue/turquoise water made Americans color-blind for anything else. Nearly all of Pacific Mexico’s resorts are in decline phase (PV/Nayarit the one exception). Thanks Chris!

Back then it was only Fisherman who went to Cabo. There were only a couple of hotels and NO downtown to speak of. There was NO marina .. we pushed the Pangas off the shoreline where the Marina is now. There was NO Airport so getting to Cabo was an adventure in itself.
I have watched it change and it has gone from a sleepy little fishing town and is now more like Las Vegas. When you used to get off the plane once they got an airport ( actually a single runway and a Big Metal Building … there was only fisherman going .. and all you saw coming off the luggage was Fishing Rod Holder , Tackle boxes , and Ice Chest …. now you rarely ever see that but instead see … Golf Clubs, Surf boards , Bikes, Baby Strollers …
I still go there all the time to fish … and have tons of good friends there … but it certainly is not the same anymore. But at least I can say I knew it when …
