I spent a lot of time in Tulum and swore two years ago I wouldn’t return. Perhaps I just need to wait a little longer.

Chedraui was crazy busy even during non peak days and the lines were horrendous. We were just in Tulum as well last week. Jaguar park was not busy at all.

Kenneth –
That’s a very interesting perspective and comparison.

Think Sayulita. And right next-door to Sayulita is Puerto Vallarta, which still draws more Mexican tourists and Keeps growing but routines its personality. Thanks for the great thought-provoking article.

First time I was there was in 1973, definitely early Phase 1; then again in 2004 with family – still quite a laid back place.
Sometime after that it was designated a Pueblo Magico – that’s when it seemed to lose its magic. We visited in 2018 and were appalled at the prices and traffic on the 9 kilometer beach strip and again in 2022 when I lost my room key card and the hotel charged me 500 pesos for a replacement.
That’s when we took Tulum off our places to visit list.
I wish it well in the future.

Nothing new under the sun. I don’t think a tourist-based economy really works well for anyone in the long term.

We now live in SMA most of the year. We have been back in Tulum for 2 weeks and I completely agree. It seems to be doing a complete turn around to the Tulum we fell in love with. Yes it’s growing but I think all of the bad instagram press is probably a good thing.. in a way. I am feeling a much more family vibe and a much cleaner town than even a month ago.
