According to two biographies of Malinche I have read (and the play”Malinche: the Musical – not a hstorial document but lots of fun ) Jerónimo de Aguilar eventually taught Malinche Spanish and assisted her in negotiating the agreements with tribal kings for the soldiers Cortes used in the Conquest

Hi Bob. Thank you. This article is very interesting to me because I am reading “A Land So Strange; The Epic Journey of Cabeza de Vaca”, authored by Andres Resendez. My book intersects when in 1518 Velazquez is named adelantado ( civil authority ) of Yucatan by Fernando King of Spain. Then Velazquez appointed Narvaez his contador (comptroller). Cabeza de Vaca does not meet Velazquez because he dies around 1524; and Cabeza de Vaca did not start his main expedition until 1527. 1528 is the year Cabeza de Vaca starts his 8 year journey. I am confident Bob is familiar with this story. With that in mind, in case he decides he wants to wtell the story, my information is limited.

Bob is correct about the names. I have always used Cristobal Colon because he sailed for the Spanish monarchy.

I believe Christopher Columbus’s name was Cristobal Colon in Spain and Cristoforo Colombo in Italy.

Historically speaking, “Ferdinand” was “Fernando” and “Christopher Columbus” was “Cristoforo Colombo”. I believe in using authentic names where possible.
