I had the honor of working with Don when he was Director of Ecology, and although he sounded like an interesting man, we never got close enough for me to learn about his rich experience. I wished I would have known. So many people in San Miguel have fascinating life stories, which adds to the uniqueness of this place. So sad to see that he has passed away. Thank you for this wonderful article!

Thanks Ann Marie. Don Patterson was a very interesting man. This article is a memorial to his work. Just an aside, “Xibalba” is an interesting Mayan word for the title of his book. Hmmm?

Beautiful piece—thank you for honoring Don’s incredible legacy. In addition to his contributions to archaeology, he played a key early role in uncovering our regional water contamination issues, installing some of the first solutions, and sparking work across government, community groups, and multiple organizations, including mine.
