Not many. The Extended family is the norm in Mexico where most family members stay close throughout their lives, maybe not living in the same house but in the same area.
Extended families are also the reason for the obvious fact that Mexican kids are much more happy and well behaved than their Northern counterparts. Extended families consider their family life their #1 priority above all else. The little ones are greatly doted on and the bonds stay close for their lives. Northeners consider this “spoiling” but the kids here are also given a lot more responsibilities when young. And the traditions here are fun for all ages, there is no need to rebel against your parents to have fun.
I’ve lived here over 18 years in mostly predominantly Mexican neighborhoods, all personal observations.
After my 2nd year here, I noticed how much more uptight the Northerners were, not very appealing!

This is not what I see all around me in GDL, Chapala and Axixic. I frequently see 3 generation households.

Seniors’ accommodations are a good investment as this loss of nuclear family supports continues.
