I did not see that the article called it an “entitlement”. It calls it a bonus that labor is entitled to. They have earned it.

And perhaps a journalist!

Very American of you to call it entitlement. Most developed countries in the world have similar labor laws and 13th month bonus structures. The USA labor laws are the exception rather than the rule. It is not entitlement, is is protection for the employee. It prevents a system often called “hire and fire at will” which is often considered by non-USAians as abusive and the employee gets the the short end of the stick. The Mexican labor laws are closely aligned with European, South America, and Asian labor laws. I cannot speak for the Middle East because it is the one part of the world that I have not worked and had employees.

Compared to the U.S. it is graphicly different for anyone who hires anyone for practically anything, even short term of what you are required to give them…and you didn’t mention the automatic “bonus”. And now..the real shocker. If you need to lay them off or maybe fired, you could be liable for hundreds of thousands of pesos based on incredibly generous calculations (principles, automatic yearly bonus, etc., etc.) that can put you financially under. Talk about entitlement. And this is why people don’t want to or can afford to hire people, or pay them much of anything. Your generosity in salary can and will be used against you.

I think still give something. I assume that’s 500 pesos for four hours work. Peanuts. My helper, for example, and it’s most Mexicans, do not get remittances or any other handouts. They live only on the small money they earn.

That’s the “Utlidad” bonus they get which is an additional percentage of your companies net earnings.
