I understand that you are not allowed to do that. Yet this topic gets kicked around with different interpretations and views locations in Mexico.
Even saying their are two different types of Residencies. One being just a resident (not making any income in Mexico) and the other being a Tax resident (paying taxes in Mexico from making any income. Even Airbnb income).
If just a resident (no income) they say in Baja you are allowed to drive a foreign vehicle and it will not be confiscated. I have never heard of any resident getting their car confiscated.
Some say living in a free zone makes a difference which I not sure of.
Living in Baja North and some living in Baja Sur it has caused confusion and some expats major panic.
I have a Mexican drivers license and a US one. I have a Mexican registered vehicle and 3 US plated vehicles. All have Sentri for crossing into the US.
I have never been stopped and checked for this issue driving my US registered vehicles. The police can’t check your residency status. Only your license. I have never been stopped in 7 years, but if I did I would show my drivers license with whatever country vehicle I was driving.

Why must the resident begin the process from the beginning to obtain a new card.
