Tickets were easy to buy online using our phones. Both trips were on time, rapid and beautiful. In both directions the train was mostly full with a cross-section of residents and tourists. I say give this extraordinary piece of infrastructure a little time. It took 20 years to get the West Side Highway in NYC built, and now the BQE is falling down while Brooklyn residents argue with each other.

Just like the new airports for CDMX and Telum. They are both a very long way away from the travel’s destination. The same is true with this train. What’s the point in taking the train if it doesn’t even come close to the towns it supposedly serves?

I take the Platino bus. It’s cheaper, faster and much more comfortable.

Now it just sits deserted as a monument to poor planning…I hope Tren Maya can avoid a similar fate!

I flew into Merida from QRO in Oct and then took an ADO nonstop bus to Campeche (2+) hours. I wanted to take the train but the schedule wasn’t convenient for my trip. The ADO stations are close to the city centers. One day I will ride the Tren Maya!

Some of the reasons will be difficult to fix in the short run, for example the inconvenience of actually getting to the station locations.

The easier things simply revolve around measuring customer satisfaction, identifying and ranking the problem areas and then developing and executing plans to correct them. I could create a very long list, many of which are relatively fixable in the short term. These include customer friendly advance ticket sales processes that are actually measured by customer surveys instead of the opinions of Tren Maya employees.

As long as the government simply plugs the funding gap the funding gap will always be there.

The “International Tourist” car costing much more, however is not so full. As noted, trains are rarely profitable, but
this train is very popular with the local towns and cities around the Yucatan, and also for tourists visiting the restored Ruins. There is no way it is a waste for the many purposes it is used for. Cargo going from North to South and between the Gulf and Pacific has been planned from the beginning and will surely help the annual public transportation
budget. How can anyone be content without seeing life through ‘past, present and future’ lenses, especially in places like the ancient Yucatan where there is much town/village isolation, and not everyone has a car. The very fast Tren is even cheaper than the bus for a variety of limited income peoples.
